Rumours You’ve Heard About Lip fillers That Aren’t True

  • by

When people hear the words “lip fillers,” they immediately think duck lips. All it takes is seeing one bad over-the-top lip job (OK, a lot of bad ones) on reality TV for people to swear off fillers all together.

The stigma surrounding cosmetic procedures, even non-invasive ones like temporary fillers, is still very much a thing despite all the advances being made in the field and the rise in popularity of cosmetic work. Don’t believe me? Bring up fillers in conversation with your friends and see what they have to say. I did, and I wasn’t really shocked by how negative people were toward them. I was surprised though by how misinformed everyone was about the entire process.

RUMOUR 1: IF I DON’T LIKE THE LOOK OF MY LIP FILLER, THERE’S NOTHING I CAN DO TO FIX IT.

It is true that some fillers (such as poly-l-lactic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite) take a year or two to break down, so until that day comes, you might be stuck with your results. At Bennetts, we use a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler, which is a something your own body produces. This type of filler has a small particle size, so the results will look very natural . In the unlikely event that you do not like the look of your lips, an HA eraser enzyme called hyaluronidase can be injected to immediately dissolve the filler and your lips will be back to normal.

RUMOUR 2: LIP FILLERS STRETCH YOUR LIPS OUT. ONCE YOU START GETTING THE TREATMENT, YOU’LL HAVE TO CONTINUE FOREVER OR ELSE YOUR LIPS WILL DEFLATE AND SAG.

This is not even slightly true. You can stop cold turkey and never look back and never regret it – Here’s why: putting hyaluronic acid (a substance that naturally exists in our bodies) filler into the skin actually stimulates collagen production. Even after your body’s natural enzymes start to dissolve the filler over the course of the next six months to two years (this depends on the particle size of the filler used and where it’s placed), what’s left over actually thickens your skin’s dermis (the outermost layer you want to stay thick and healthy in order to prevent fine lines and wrinkles).

RUMOUR 3: YOU CAN ALWAYS TELL WHEN SOMEONE HAS HAD LIP FILLERS BECAUSE THEY NEVER LOOK NATURAL.

At Bennetts, we use a no-needle system, The way the filler is placed in to the lips, differs from that of the needle system, The filler is delivered in a different way and then massaged in well and the results are a fuller, plumper natural look.

RUMOUR 4: LIP INJECTIONS ARE ONLY FOR PEOPLE WITH THIN LIPS.

Added volume for fullness is a common request, but we also get clients who want to adjust undefined Cupid’s bows, asymmetry, disproportionate top and bottom lips, turned down corners, or dry, cracked lips (which appear glossier with fillers).

RUMOUR 5: YOU HAVE TO GET THEM REFILLED ALL THE TIME IF THEY’RE TEMPORARY.

You do have to get touched up if you plan on maintaining your look, but not as often as you’d think. It all depends on how your body metabolises the filler and how much you smile and talk as the product also breaks down much through frequent movement from chewing, talking, or smiling. A lot of Bennetts lip filler clients usually need a lip touch-up after about six – nine months after their initial appointments, but for some clients it can last longer or shorter periods of time.
